Boy at the window is a moving portrait of a young Negro boy and his struggle to find understanding and love. Coin Foreman is shy, sensitive, walled in by a family and neighborhood impervious to his sensibilities. Coin's family - the father who devotes his time and limited salary to the church at the expense of his suffering children; the beloved and gentle mother who dies and leaves Coin to the badgering of his peevish sister Agnes, and the older brother Oliver, whose wild life finally leads him to reform school--they cannot begin to understand Coin's heart.
Except for the love of his school friend, Esther, there is little to hold Coin to his old way of life on Berriman Street. He decides to escape to Washington wher he can live with and help his blind, kind-hearted crude Uncle Todd. Here he is further initiated into the mysteries of life and sex, and here he is further disillusioned. Through it all though, he retains his resiliency and hope of better things to come. Again he decides to escape the dreariness of what he knows. "Tomorrow he would be running away," he thinks. "Running into trouble maybe. But his saved up money was safe. He could eat. He could buy a ticket maybe on a bus to Louisville ... He panted with excitement ... he would come back and face them all big as life. And ready to marry Esther, he'd come back with his hands overflowing with aggies, with diamonds. It was all planned and settled. If everything went okay, he'd give God chance again."
Owen Dodson is a young writer who can turn with ease from poetry to drama to fiction. Boy at the Window is his first novel, and with it he makes a definite place for himself in the realm of the story.
Of Boy at the Window, Virginia Kirkus says: "A touching and vivid portrait of childhood grief, its tortured questions and terrible answers. Set against a background of real and full-blown character ... the author has a gift for a telling incident, and evocative reminiscence ... watch this one."
