David Donovan is the pen name of Terry T. Turner, Ph.D., former Professor of Urology and Professor of Cell Biology, now Professor Emeritus, at the University of Virginia. Dr. Turner is an expert in the basic science of andrology (male reproductive biology and medicine) and enjoys an international reputation in that field. For writings outside of science he has adopted the pen name of David Donovan.
David grew up in southern Georgia and received his bachelor's degree from the University of Georgia in 1967. After that he spent a period of service in the U. S. Army, including a tour of duty in Vietnam. He returned to the University in 1970 going back to graduate school and completing his Ph. D. in 1974. After that, he went for post-doctoral training at the University of Texas Medical School at San Antonio, TX then received a faculty appointment at the University of Virginia School of Medicine in 1976. He became a full Professor in 1991 and Professor Emeritus in 2008. His first book, Once a Warrior King (1985),was about his experiences in Vietnam and received good reviews in major newspapers across the country. The demands of David's scientific profession restricted his time for further writing outside of science, but becoming Professor Emeritus has freed him from that restraint. Murphy Station (2010) was a memoir about growing up in the American South during the time of racial integration and the Cold War, and his most recent book, Counterinsurgency: What the United States Learned in Vietnam, Chose to Forget, and Needs to Know Today, addresses the lessons of counterinsurgency that he and others learned in Vietnam. Other projects are in the works.
