Medieval Moldova and forbidden sapphic love, what could possibly go wrong?
I enjoyed this book and when I started reading it, after a few chapters I could not stop. I loved the setting (never read anything set in Moldova, nor by a moldavian author) and got attached to the characters, however something was missing. Development.
Many things were happening, especially in the second part of the book, but what I needed was more of the characters - their thoughts and emotions, and more of the f*cking romance. I know Elina and Mira were from the opposing backgrounds, but they had means to meet and they did meet each other on a reagular basis, so why most of it was "off-screen"?
In the overall, I like the storytelling with the gothic setting and romance, but the latter really lacked development.

This was… something. I am not ever sure how to describe it. A story of regrets, life choices, nostalgia, estranged sisters, and cultural heritage. We do not know everything at the beginning, the story (or actually the past) unfolds along with the plot. And there are so so many emotions in all of this.
We have two points of view of two sisters that lost contact when they were young (one left the family home and never came back), and they meet after 20 years at their father’s funeral. Both of them with their truth about the past, with their own emotional baggage. And there is this - revisionist slave/confederacy history entangled in the plot. Nona and Julia have a lot to process and rectify.
I needed a few first chapters to get going, but after that I just could not stop reading.

Uwielbiam WSZYSTKIE wzmianki muzyczne. Ćwiczenia Dylan, wzmianki o konkursach i inne rzeczy - wszystko to wywoływało u mnie ciarki podczas czytania.
Rainy Day Cafe - brzmi jak idealna kawiarnia! No zagrałabym!
A rodzice Dyan to świetny przykład adopcji międzyrasowej.
I ciocia Edith.

This book seemed like a one with a good concept - a futuristic retelling of Rapunzel. Unfortunately, it wasn’t as good as I hoped it to be.
We meet Adelaide - the main protagonist, a memory jumper. But who are memory jumpers? Well, they can edit, delete or add memories and the world doesn’t like them. They are hunted down, perceived as dangerous. This is why Adelaine is stuck in a safe house with Fawn, her guardian who is emotionally and mentally abusive to her. Fawn controls Adelaide all the time and uses for her own purposes.
Ironically, Fawn was the best written character in the whole book, the rest was mostly one-dimensional, nothing unique about them. The writing was very simple, which made the reading experience easy despite it being a science fiction book, however, I was hoping to read something more demanding. And the worldbuilding was really poor, a reader didn’t really know how big the world is and what states are in it. The tech seemed advanced sometimes, and sometimes I felt like going back to the Middle Ages.
“The Memory Jumper” could be a really good read, but turned out to be very mediocre. However, I think the author has potential and I’ll give her a chance if he writes something new.
