Calum MacLeod left a semi-feudal English village in 1988 to explore Asia - and kindle a passion that has kept him there ever since. On graduating in Oriental Studies (Chinese) from Wadham College, Oxford University, Calum first traveled through the newly independent Central Asian states in 1992, en route to Beijing, China, which remains his home. After co-authoring the Odyssey Guide to Uzbekistan, Calum worked as an investment consultant in China's booming economy, helping establish joint ventures to produce condoms, cider and other essentials. His travels included every Chinese province, and almost all of China's many neighbors. Timed for the PRC's 50th anniversary, he co-authored China Remembers (OUP, 1999),then took up writing full-time as China correspondent for The Independent newspaper (UK). Today he works as Asia correspondent for the newspaper USA Today, reporting from as far west as Kyrgyzstan, south to Indonesia and east to Japan. But nothing beats a round of shashlyk kebabs, on a plate of warm nan, enjoyed in an Uzbek bazaar.
