Jane’s first stage-play, LIFER: a WOMAN of PRINCIPLE, was performed at the Mumford Theatre, Cambridge, in June 2012. She is currently developing several crime ideas for television.
Based on her research with female offenders, it tells the story of Melanie who has been languishing in prison since Callaghan was at number 10, Carter was President of the US and ELO had just begun their world tour. As Melanie blows off the dust from her past to reveal a woman governed by her principles, so she contemplates her latest bid for parole and sweet freedom! Performed by Beverley Dean, LIFER: a WOMAN of PRINCIPLE is a Moonstruck Theatre Company production.
Obtaining a Doctor of Philosophy in Criminology from Jesus College, Cambridge, Jane conducted a number of studies on female offenders, and has created dramas and drama docs based on her research both at this time and since. Her screenplay THE THIEVING HEADMISTRESS, was transmitted on BBC2. Starring Pauline Quirke, Denis Lawson and Geoffrey Palmer, it told the story of a head teacher of a London Catholic school (a former nun) who went to prison for stealing thousands from the school funds; and Good Fellows, a thriller set in a secure hospital. Jane has also written episodes of crime dramas including THE BILL and IN SUSPICIOUS CIRCUMSTANCES and contributed to documentaries from her research. This includes a BBC PANORAMA on female offenders and a documentary proposal with a leading forensic psychiatrist and child psychologist, to help end knife crime.
Her book on the childhood and teenage years of ROSE WEST was published in paperback by Hodder & Stoughton this year. Her first book, AFTER EVIL, a tragic but heart warming story of a teenage boy whose mother was murdered by the Yorkshire Ripper was published the previous year. Her first crime detective novel HOBAN is currently out to publishers.
Alongside this, Jane has written a brand new drama with song for television: ALFIE’S WAR. Set in Bethesda in north Wales, this pre-watershed ‘feel good’ is about a young evacuee from Liverpool and his host, the diminutive but feisty matriarch Mrs Price. She has two film commissions, both by JS Productions: Eggshell Blue, with director Julian Farino (The Oranges, Sex in the City) and DON’T’ THINK TWICE… with Chris Stevenson.http://www.janewoodrow.co.uk/
