Michio Hoshino was born in 1952 in Ichikawa-shi, Chiba, Japan. In 1969 he sailed to Los Angeles on the Argentina-maru and traveled alone for two months across the United States. In 1973 he spent the summer with an Eskimo family in Shishmaref, Alaska. After graduating from the Faculty of Economics at Keio University in 1976, Michio worked as an assistant for photographer Kojo Tanaka for the next two years. He then enrolled in the Wildlife Management program at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, where he studied for four years. Using Fairbanks as his base camp, Michio took photographs of the natural scenery, wildlife, and people of Alaska. His photographs were published in national magazines, including "Audubon" and "National Geographic". Michio was killed by a brown bear at Lake Kurilskoya on the Kamchatka Peninsula, Russia, while on photography trip in 1996.
