O. Henry (pen name) is one of the most famous short story writers. His real name is William Sydney Porter. He was born in 1862 in Greensboro in North Carolina, USA. He grew up without his mother, who died from tuberculosis when O. Henry was three. In his childhood he read many books from classics to dime novels. Twenty years late he moved to Texas. He met a woman here, Athol Estes and in 1887 he married her. He had various jobs. He worked as a clerk too in the First National Bank of Austin. In 1896 Porter had to run away from his family house because he was accused of stealing money. He came back a year late because he wanted to see his sick wife Atol, who died from tuberculosis. In 1898 O. Henry was taken to prison in Columbus, Ohio where he was until 1901. In this time he started to write short stories. During prison time he wrote a lot of stories. In 1902 he moved to New York and in 1907 he was married to Sarah Lindsey Coleman. O. Henry’s second marriage was unhappy. In 1910 Sara left her husband. One of the reasons for leaving was probably an alcoholic problem. O. Henry was extremely addicted to alcohol. He earned a lot of money but he was an unhappy man. He died in 1910 a virtually broke and lonely person. Generally O. Henry wrote approximately six hundred stories. Part of these was published in several magazines, for example The New York World magazine. His stories are famous for their surprise endings, mystery and specific humor. They describe everyday lives of ordinary people like waiters, housewives, actresses, homeless. Readers can find in O. Henry’s stories all human feelings, like happiness and misfortune, love and hate, hope and dreams.
