Dr. McKay is the coauthor, with Don Dinkmeyer and others, of twelve books and parent and teacher education programs including Systematic Training for Effective Parenting (STEP),the world’s leading parent education program.
His publications include: Raising a Responsible Child, Systematic Training for Effective Parenting [STEP], Systematic Training for Effective Parenting of Teens [STEP/TEEN], Systematic Training for Effective Teaching [STET], PREP for Effective Family Living, The Next STEP: Effective Parenting through Problem Solving, New Beginnings: Skills for Single Parents and Stepfamily Parents, Early Childhood STEP, Teaching and Leading Children: Training for Supportive Guidance for Children Under Six, How You Feel Is Up to You: The Power of Emotional Choice and Raising Respectful Kids in a Rude World and Calming the Family Storm. He received his Ph.D. in Counseling and Guidance from the University of Arizona in 1976. Dr. McKay is a retired psychologist, a clinical member of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy, and a diplomate in Adlerian psychology from the North American Society of Individual Psychology. He is a former teacher and counselor, and an international educational and psychological consultant who has conducted workshops in human relations, anger management and parent and teacher study group leader training in the United States and Canada, Mexico, Germany, Switzerland, The Netherlands, The United Kingdom and Ireland. Dr. McKay has received awards for his contributions to the counseling field from the North American Society of Adlerian Psychology and the International Association of Marriage and Family Counselors. He served on a Presidential committee as a consultant to Office for Substance Abuse Prevention, National Implementation Program: Parents' Advisory Committee. Dr. McKay lives and works in Tucson with his wife Dr. Joyce McKay who has co-authored books with him and others. Dr. McKay is a valuable resource to the Tucson community and the ASA, generously giving of his time to organize, present, and manage the PACE committee (Professiona Adlerian Continuing Education.) It is largely because of his efforts that the Adlerian Society of Arizona has been able to contribute so successfully to the community in the past several years. Gary organizes and coordinates the Spring Fling Adlerian Seminar, the Adlerianfest (Fall) Workshops, and is active in helping us with topics for our educational forums, newsletters, and social and educational get-togethers.
