British historian, literary biographer, and novelist who has published over 98 books to date either under his own name (35 titles) or his pseudonyms Peter Tremayne (55 titles) and Peter MacAlan (8 titles). He has also published 100 short stories. His work has appeared in 25 languages.
He began his career as a junior reporter on an English south coast weekly, becoming deputy editor of an Irish weekly newspaper and was then editor of a weekly publishing trade journal in London. He first went as a feature writer to Northern Ireland in 1964 for a London daily newspaper. His first book was published in 1968: Wales: a Nation Again, on the Welsh struggle for political independence.
In 1975 he became a full-time writer. He used his academic background to produce many titles in the field of Celtic Studies, including The Druids (1994),Polish translation Druidzi (1998).
Apart from his Celtic Studies interests, Ellis has written full-length biographies of the writers H. Rider Haggard, W. E. Johns, Talbot Mundy and E. C. Vivian, as well as critical essays on other popular fiction authors. His output in the fictional field, writing in the genre of horror fantasy and heroic fantasy, began in 1977 when the first "Peter Tremayne" book appeared - Hound of Frankenstein (1977). Between 1983 and 1993 he also wrote eight adventure thrillers under the name "Peter MacAlan".
His international bestselling Sister Fidelma historical mystery series includes 29 novels published 1994-2020 and two collections: Hemlock at Vespers (2000, ls15) and Whispers of the Dead (2004, ls15),plus 12 uncollected stories, incl. The Lair of the White Fox (2016, novella, ebook).

Doskonałe kompendium fałszywych stereotypów na temat druidów i smutny dowód na to, że duch Iola Morganwga trzyma się mocno. Nic dziwnego - nie ukazują się u nas żadne prace prezentujące aktualny stan wiedzy na temat Celtów (może poza środowiskiem akademickim) i zwykły, szary czytelnik jest skazany na nieliczne recenzje naukowe, które szczęśliwie pojawią się w necie. Polscy autorzy piszą tak, jakby w ogóle nie znali wyników badań, które przeprowadzono w ostatnich 50 latach albo po prostu je ignorowali. Wina niewątpliwie leży też po stronie wydawców, którzy najwyraźniej są zdania, że bardziej opłaca się powielać w nieskończoność romantyczne bzdury niż obalać mity. Nawet gdy chodzi o odkrycia, które były nowe i świeże 50 lat temu, a dziś są już powszechnie znane wszystkim, tylko nie polskim czytelnikom.
Tyle dobrego, że jakoś nikt nie pali się do wznawiania książki Ellisa. I dobrze.

Warto ją przeczytać,gdyż autor zebrał informacje z innych książek i poskładał w jedną całość. Porównuje on różne teorie,obala je lub przyjmuje. Czasem książka mnie nudziła,gdyż najbardziej zależało mi na czasach pogańskich i konkretach,których często brakowało. Czyta się ją wolno,niemniej jednak każdy miłośnik kultury celtyckiej powinien ją przeczytać. W końcu wiemy o nich tak mało.Każda wiedza jest cenna.
