Jeden z najważniejszych pisarzy chrześcijańskich XX wieku. Autor licznych utworów inspiracyjnych, religijnej (niedogmatycznej) eseistyki i powieści - historycznych i współczesnych. Redaktor i propagator twórczości George'a MacDonalda , zarówno powieściowej, jak i kazań i kliku książek poświęconych jego życiu i twórczości. W 1970 na Uniwersytecie Humboldta razem z żoną Judy zainicjowali działalność księgarni chrześcijańskiej One Way BookShop.
Opublikował 64 powieści (część napisanych z Judith Pella), w tym dwa cykle fantastyczne, Kroniki Livingstone'a: Na krawędzi czasu (The Rift in Time, 1997; pol. 2001) i Hidden in Time (2000); The Beyond Trilogy Series: The Garden at the Edge of Beyond (1998), Heaven and Beyond (2013) i Hell and Beyond: A Novel (2014).
