An Infinity of Mirrors

Hitler's shadow already looms over the resurgent Reich when talented and witty Paule Bernheim marries Wilhelm von Rhode, German Army officer and proud scion of an important Junker family. Paule, daughter of France's greatest Jewish actor, clear of the prejudice that tainted those who had suffered the trauma of the First World War, gives herself with hope and love, despite the bitter opposition of her father, to create home and children for her chosen husband.
First shadows are cast by the Nazi anti-Jewish riots in the early 1930s, when Paule is brought face-to-face with the conflict that is to confront these two for the rest of their lives. Filled with foreboding, they yet believe their love will protect them from the anti-semitic canker now beginning to infect all levels of German society. But, before long, Veelee, her husband, is compromising with the evil and Paule is mortally afraid. By the end of 1938, she can no longer endure living in Nazi Germany and, after terrifying ordeal, she leaves Berlin and returns with her young son to Paris.
With the Occupation, Paule is again plunged into the nightmare world of pogrom and persecution. The Gestapo roves the streets of her beloved Paris and she knows in her heart that, sooner or later, she and her son will have to pay for their accident of birth. Veelee, now a General, is posted to the city, and the last act of tragedy is played out in mounting tension and horror; magnificently told with brief glimpses of tenderness and human warmth to heighten by contrast the ravaged picture of human wickedness.
