My family calls me inconvenient. The gods call it disrespect. The House of Coin calls it a debt—and they want to collect by locking me in a gilded room until I learn to kneel.

Then I open my mouth in the wrong chamber, and the God of Discord looks at me and doesn't stop looking.

Koshin doesn't rescue me. He takes me - because Coin thinks they own me, and he's never met a claim he didn't want to tear apart with his bare hands.

I don't trust him. I don't worship him. I'm not afraid of him the way people expect.

But he doesn't flinch when I tell the truth. And in a world where gods trade in lies and mortals learn to swallow them, that's the most dangerous thing about him.

The divine Houses rule this city the way crime families rule theirs - through blood, debt, and silence. I've survived all three.

I just wasn't prepared for a god who likes me loud.
