Absolwent Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons w Nowym Jorku.
W 1976 r., wspólnie z Danielem Carletonem Gajduskiem, otrzymał Nagrodę Nobla w dziedzinie fizjologii i medycyny za zidentyfikowanie wirusa zapalenia wątroby typu B (HBV).
W latach 1999-2002 był pierwszym szefem Instytutu Astrobiologii NASA.
